Ki Shusui Harvest 2015
Plus an Announcement:
We have a 2016 Spawn!

What happened with the 2015 ki shusui spawn?

There was no 2015 spawn! And that's the good news.

Laughing
In brief, this is what happened.

In October 2014 the chosen 7 ki shusui oyagoi-to-be (parent fish) were moved to their winter home, the lower pond, about 100,000 gallons, devoted exclusively to them.

There were three females and four males. Over the winter, one of the females disappeared.

In May 2015 there were six ki shusui oyagoi in the pond but they did not spawn. Very possibly, there were too few fish per gallon, and they were too young, and so there was no pressure upon them to spawn.

By July 2015, the colors had changed on the remaining two females and one of the males. This told me that I had to get those two females out of the program and I began to wish that they would not spawn -- and they did not.

In August 2015 we pulled the lower pond. We documented the pull and sent the 6 koi to the Big Pond. I began looking at the F1 siblings with view to replacing the two females who went bad.

If you wish to see this mini-pull of the six oyagoi with their before pictures, please click on this link.

Before and after photos of the males and females plus commentary from Team Ki Shusui are posted there on koiphen.

To be continued in the main content on this page, the harvest of the Big Pond, and the selection of the new female oyagoi-to-be who did the dance and produced a spring 2016 ki shusui spawn!

2016 Spawn!
The six ki shusui oyagoi captured and pictured on this page, spawned on May 12, 2016. Fry expected to hatch on May 18. Will post photos and news as there is news to report!

About the October 2015 harvest of the Ki Shusui Project Pond.

Hi, all,

The point of the 2015 pull was to reduce the fish load, exchange the old water for clean and most importantly, take a look at how the F1 oyagoi are coming along.

1. We did examine and photograph the three F1 males who will used in the 2016 spawn.

2. We checked out the back-up females that didn't make the first cut last year. They will replace the two females who lost their winning looks over the winter and also the fish who "disappeared.'' The potential replacement females look very promising.

3. We checked out the fry from the ki shusui 2014 redo spawn of the original parents,  as well as general flock spawn from the residents of the Big Pond.

4. Having identified the best potential oyagoi and photographed them, all were returned to the Big Pond for the winter. We will pull the pond again in May and set up the winners for breeding.

See the Ki Shusui 2015 Video tab for YouTube clips of the bowled fish during the 2015 Harvest.

Below are the best three males, one photo of each one.
The three koi below are the replacement females ...
and I think they are looking very good. They didn't make the cut last year because ideally, shusui doesn't have a colored face. However the colored face is not a genetic trait and can be culled out in the offspring. The third female had lost all of her ki (yellow) markings. This year, the ki is coming back! She was one of the top three ki shusui in 2013 and I am very happy she is becoming beautiful again. :)

Here are two photos each of the three female candidates for the 2016 spawn. Smile
New Smile babies! These are F2, at one month old. They are large and full-bodied. Will show more photos after they markings develop!

These young fish-- below --are from the 2015 flock spawn. Their parents are shusui, ki shusui, midori, ayawakaba, doitsu ogon, hariwake. It is a random spawn decided by the fish involved. Sometimes beauty happens. Sometime mutts happen. :) We will look at these kids in 2016, the October Harvest and see how they grew.
We do not sell koi -- or anything else! This site is a documentation of my ki shusui breeding efforts and results. Thanks for stopping by.
